Cultural Tour of Nepal

Its beauty, its people, and their lives.

Travel, since its incorporation has been beyond a recreational act – it has been educative, and to an extent ‘transformative’. It is no lie when someone tells you ‘that a travelled person is a wise person’. It is so because he/she has seen more.

This travel itinerary does not simply take you sightseeing – it has been prepared to enhance a traveler’s experience – an authentic Nepali experiences. Nepal, despite its geographic size, is a diverse land, something which you will see for yourself as you travel from the hills to the mountains, and then the plains. The country is made up of its people – the Newa: people and their charming architecture, the Tharus and their simple lives, and the Lamas and their Buddhist flags.

Overnight: Traditional Home Swotha/Nepali Ghar

Kathmandu Durbar Square: Kathmandu Durbar Square, like an open space museum is a rich tribute to Nepal’s illustrative history. The streets are till date paved in brick, and the square features several temples, the former palace of Nepal’s rulers, and a museum, in traditional architecture that dates back many centuries.

Ason Market: Ason, a busy market place lined with several shops and enthusiastic shoppers is directly connected to the Durbar Square. The market has been an important junction since ancient times when traders travelled through the route between Tibet and India.

Pashupatinath: The Pashupatinath Temple, one of the most sacred temples for Hindus across the world is visited by millions of pilgrims annually. While the main temple houses the Shivalinga, a tour of Pashupati Area – dotted with shrines, structures, and ghats is much more immersive and insightful.

Bouddhanath: In the evening, we visit the white domed Boudhanath Stupa – one of the world’s largest unique structure’s stupa. Set in the heart of the city, one is amazed how the premise drowns all exterior sounds and engulfs a visitor in its serene environment. We take a few rounds of the stupa, take blessings from a monk, and then offer a butter lamp, and then watch the sun set over the whitewashed dome.

In the evening, we will enjoy an authentic Nepalese dinner in a traditional restaurant. We will also watch a cultural Nepali dance performance.

Overnight: Traditional Home Swotha/Nepali Ghar

Today will be a unique peek into Nepal, its people and their lives. In Nepal, Shamanism is a part of the religious beliefs within certain ethnic groups, mostly of the people from eastern and western hills. It is embedded deep into their roots, and they, till date practice the Shamanism belief – taking their ailments to a Shaman. The Shaman (Jhankri/Dhaami) is a priest who wards off the evil in a person, therefore curing one from a certain ailment.

You can tell your ailments to the Shaman too – and he will try to rid you of it.

Overnight: Traditional Home Swotha/Nepali Ghar

We will head out of Kathmandu early morning – soon be in the countryside taking in the views the meandering highway has to offer. Along the drive, we will pass small highway settlements, a peek into their lives as you see them carry about their daily lives.

Bandipur: Bandipur is a quaint, little picturesque town perched atop a hill. Originally a Magar settlement, Newa: traders from Bhaktapur settled down here and brought along with them their culture and architecture – which till date remains. A main street, paved in traditional stones, till date houses traditional Nepali homes on both sides. The street is fascinating to walk upon, and we will do just that. Bandipur also allows a magnificent view of Mt. Manaslu and the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Range.

Overnight: The Old Inn.

Bidding Bandipur adieu, we head for Pokhara – a bustling, touristic, lakeside town, which has been often compared to paradise. We will do a bit of sightseeing (as time permits). We will visit the Bindabashini Temple, and then enjoy a relaxing boat ride at the Phewa Lake – the city to one side and hills on the other. The lake also has a temple on a small island, which we will visit.

In the evening, we will head towards the Peace Pagoda – and if nature permits, watch the white snow capped Himalayan peaks turn into different hues of orange as the sun dips – indeed a mesmerizing sunset.

Overnight: Hotel Heritage Spa

After an early breakfast, we drive to Kimche, approximately 3 hours. A short hike (approx 45 minutes), we follow the trail towards Ghandruk. Along the way, we are greeted with beautiful views – some of the magnificent Annapurna Range while some of the deep valley below. We can also observe the beautiful culture while passing through the occasional villages – rural schools, smiling children, their beautiful settlements, slow-paced lives, and more. In no time, we find ourselves in Ghandruk.

Ghandruk: Set along the backdrop of Annapurna South (7219m), Himchuli (6441m) and Mt, Machhapuchhre (6993m), Ghandruk is a prosperous Gurung Village – an ethnic people of the region. We take in the sight of the charming village and are awed by its beauty – a landscape as beautiful as offered by Ghandruk is not a regular occurrence.

Overnight: Simple Tea House Lodge.

Today, we explore the town of Ghandruk and its surroundings in more detail. We will awake to a spectacular view of the Himalayas. After enjoying a light breakfast with a view, we take a tour of the village. We will interact with some locals, talk to them, observe their culture, ask them about their daily routines, and if permitted, see the interior of their homes. We will also visit the local museum to learn a bit more about the place’s fascinating ancestry.

We will enjoy a calm and relaxing evening, taking in the joys nature has to offer.

Overnight: Simple Tea House Lodge.

Leaving Ghandruk behind, we hike back down all the way to Nayapul. We cross Kimche, then reach Syauli Bazaar, and then to Birethani – crossing beautiful forests, rice terraces, waterfalls on the way. We reach Nayapul – the bottom of the gushing river valley. We catch a waiting vehicle which will bring us back to Pokhara.

Free to explore Lakeside – tucked in cafes, bookstores, handicraft shops in the evening.

In the heart of the jungle

Chitwan National Park: Home to the several wildlife species including one-horned rhinoceroses, tigers, elephants and crocodiles, Chitwan National Park, is Nepal’s first national park.

We arrive at our resort, Jungle Villa Resort, situated just outside the national park alongside the river and immediately enjoy the tranquility of the place. Here, several activities are planned:

Jungle Safari: A jungle safari, either on a jeep or an elephant’s back will take us inside the heart of the jungle to watch animals in their natural habitat. If lucky, you can even sight the alluring tiger.

Canoeing: Canoe down the gentle Rapti River, stop by the Gharial conservation centre.

Jungle Walk: We can also enjoy a guided jungle walk through the jungle’s periphery.

Note: Chitwan is home to the Tharu people – an ethnic group indigenous to the southern belt of Nepal. They have lived in Chitwan with the forest as their subsistence for hundreds of years. They practice short fallow shifting cultivation and also collect forest products such as wild fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants and raw materials to construct their homes.
