Trekking in the Langtang region
Snowy peaks, majestic glaciers, lakes, exotic wildlife and cultural uniqueness, Langtang region stands out among many tourist places of Nepal. The region gets its name from a Tibetan word, Langtang, where Lang means Yak and Tang means to follow. It is believed that a Sherpa once followed a lost Yak along the route which is now used by trekkers to get in to Langtang valley. Situated to the north of Kathmandu, the mountain ranges of the regions are the closet mountain range with respect to Kathmandu. Majority of Langtang region falls under the Langtang national park. Langtang trek offers up-close mountains in shortest time possible. Though the trek doesn’t offer view of mountains higher than 8000 meters in elevation, the scenery of Langtang is aesthetic. Langtang region provides a decent and averagely strenuous trekking experience.
The best trekking season for the region is late September to November. With the onset of winter starting in late November, the trekking season ceases till early February. Though still in winter, late February and early march is another best season to trek the region. With snow-clad mountains surrounding the valleys, the area is will be at utmost picturesque as it can reach. The frozen Gosaikunda glares with magnificent allure with a bed of snow covering its surrounding.
Langtang valley was annihilated during the 2015 earthquake, and major routes along the region and villages were severely affected but at present most of the routes have been rebuild. Except for Langtang valley and Ghopte; on Gosaikunda Helambu circuit trek all other routes are fully functional with hotels and lodges back to full operation. There are plenty of hotels along the trekking routes with basic toilet facilities. No Wi-fi facilities will be available on the route expect for Dhunche. Mobile charging option is limited to the availability of solar charger depending upon the place.
No health facilities as such can be found during the trekking route, except for a governmental hospital in Dhunche and Syafrubesi.
Langtang region is home to one of the most sacred lakes of Hindus, Gosaikunda Lake situated at 4380 meters. Every year during August tens of thousands of pilgrims visit the lake during the festival of Janai Purnima. Apart from that, Lhosar is widely celebrated around the Langtang region.
Langtang region is the nearest mountainous region from Kathmandu. Getting into the region is fairly easy. Buses and jeeps leave from Kathmandu early in the morning, getting a bus later during the day might not be possible because of the state of the road.
